I grew up in Holland and France with a Dutch mother and a French father, surrounded by books, art and music which I recognize to be a privilege. I loved to read and did so in various languages (which is quite normal in Holland where I was brought up).
I have always loved animals and brought home many unwanted, sick and otherwise needy creatures. But I could not study the subject of my dreams, Zoology, as I missed some required math skills. So I worked in different (international) settings while earning an executive secretary degree in Lausanne, Switzerland and later a Master’s degree in Anthropology at the Free University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands. I have various other diplomas, mostly because of a love of learning.
I am a firm believer in the power of experiencing things through practice. It broadens one’s perspective and it makes you appreciate what others are doing considerably. I sometimes wish that we could switch places with each other more often. This would probably contribute in changing the world for the better.
After having lived in The Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States, I have now settled in France, in the region where my grandmother used to live, and where my parents now are – The Drôme Provençale. It is spectacularly beautiful, and is less traveled than the “Provence” which is a little further down South. But it is equally beautiful, or even maybe more surprising (but I am biased).
I live in a medieval village called “Dieulefit” (literally translated “Created by God”) with a little more than 3000 inhabitants. Very different from New York City where I lived prior to coming here! In Dieulefit you know your neighbor, and nights are silent…
I hope you will enjoy reading more about this very attractive part of France and that you will keep track of my reflections on life as it is lived here. I intend to share information, pictures and videos, so stay tuned!
Do not hesitate to reach out, who knows, maybe one day we’ll meet!
